E-community National Conference '09 (posting 4)

About the conference …..

The seminar was organized by Pusat Kajian E-komuniti UKM, Universiti Kebanbsaan Malaysia. It was held on the 18 & 19 March 2009 at PNB Darby Park Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. But, I join the conference only for one day, which is on 18 March 2009 because I got computer test for the next day. The main motive for the seminar is “Merapatkan Jurang Digital: Masyarakat Berpengetahuan, Model Malaysia. From this seminar, I gain a lot of information and knowledge about how to bridge the digital gap between the citizens of Malaysia, especially for the people who from the small town or living in rural areas. Based on the information that I get from the seminar, the people who are living in the rural areas is do not have basics ICT knowledge and skill because their income is lower than the people from big city and they also do not aware the existence of online application. So, from this seminar I’ve chosen two very interesting topic that I want to share with you all are “Bridging the Digital Divide: SKMM perspective”, and “Reducing Writing Apprehension through Blogging Activities”.

Topic: Bridging the Digital Divide: SKMM perspective

Presenter: Dato Jailani Johari’s

The speaker for this topic is Dato Jailani Johari’s who is from SKMM (Suruhanjaya Komunikasi Multimedia Malaysia). Digital divide and USP is a mechanism to bridge the digital gap that exists among the rural community and to create an e-community. They have estimated household broadband penetration by 2010 and the BDD effort are including the 3 main things which are the infrastructure, service, and sustainability. In addition, Dato Jailani Johari’s also talk about the USP. Actually what is USP? USP is Universal Service Provision. The USP is designed to promote the widespread availability and usage of Network services and/or application services throughout Malaysia. The objectives for the USP are to:

• Collective access to basic telephony and public pay phone services

• Individual access to basic telephony services

• Collective access to Internet access services, and

• Individual access to Internet access services
  

There are some USP projects (2002-2008):

• Basic Telephony (2002-2007)

Basic Telephony (2007-2008) which is provides collective and individual telecommunicative and cellular voice communication. In providing access to basic telephony, public payphone services and Internet access, the designated universal service provider is expected to consider the use of alternative transmission technologies such as satellite, fixed wireless, Cellular and fixed wireline, where necessary for the provision of the services. The universal service provider is expected to adopt the best international practice in the telecommunications industry, including compliance to relevant industry standards on network end-to-end performance.

• Community Broadband Library (CBL)

They are target 152 CBL nationwide and (one supervisor among local community, training and promotional practice). Their target Groups is 36 OKU centers. They will provide assistive technology and facilities (consult the center) for people with disabilities.

• Community Broadband Center (CBC) 2007-2008

This project is planning for pilot project and it will provide communication towers along the East-West Highway. They target 1105 mukim with community Broadband Center (CBC) and one mukim for one CBC with 278 CBC nationwide. One manager and assistance also will be chosen for this project.

Besides that, Dato Jailani Johari’s also mention the USP target profiles and service which are about the:

• Underserved area

An underserved area is defined as an area where the penetration rate for basic telephony service is twenty per cent (20%) below the national penetration rate. An area referred to here is a district as defined under the National Land Code.

• Underserved localities

• Underserved group

At the end of the presentation, Dato Jailani Johari’s mention about the Broad Community Functionally and there are many issues about it which are the policy-uniformity of telecenter models, Location- site acquisition (land power etc), site suitability. Critical Infostructure- content development, community involvement and sustainability-local champion, expert, and trainer.

Topic: Reducing Writing Apprehension Through Blogging Activities

Presenter: Madam Azianura Hani Shaari

The topic was presented by Madam Azianura Hani Shaari from UITM Penang. This a very interesting topic because it talk about what are the symptoms for writing apprehension, and some factors that contribute toward a writing apprehension. Actually what is writing apprehension? As I know, such students were more apprehensive about writing, rated their own writing ability lower, were less confident that they could master certain writing skill or genres, and had more negative attitudes toward previous writing.

According to Madam Azianura Hani Shaari, there are 6 symptoms for the writing apprehension:

• Scared to write
• Hand cramp
• Hate writing
• Mental blocking problems
• Produce a shorted essay
• Ideas hardly developed

Besides that, there are some factors contribute towards writing apprehension such as:

• Lack confident

Student who are highly apprehensive (lack confidence) also report weak self-efficacy. The students who are lack confidence are contributing towards writing apprehension. Those students are scared to give any comment and opinion for their writing because they are lack of confident. Besides that, maybe the students will give up for their writing and never improve for their writing skill.

• Teachers’ comments

In addition, the teachers’ comments also contribute towards writing apprehension. According to Madam Azianura, the teachers’ comments are very important for student writing. For example, if the teacher gives the good comment for the student writing, so it will encourage the student to do more writing. But if the students get the bad comment from their teacher, so they will evasively to do more writing. It is because maybe the student cannot accept the bad comment from their teacher and gives up improving their writing.

But for me, sometime we should accept any comment from our teacher because the comments from the teachers are the best way to improve our writing. If we always do not learn how to accept any ideas, any comment from another people, how we can always improve ourselves from the mistake and become a successful person?

Besides that, Madam Azianura also mentions about “Fostering Positive Writing Attitudes through Blogging” It mean that through the weblogs, it can reduce our writing apprehension. What is the point mention by Madam Azianura? Let us see the below…

• huge audience-native speakers

Especially the native speaker (huge audience) from the different background and other part of the world, they can give the comment for student on weblog. The students maybe can always get the different, fresh comment, and learn something from the huge audience and at the same time they can reduce the writing apprehension.

• face saving

Normally, the blogging activity is providing the space for the blogger to write their comment, opinion, and every interesting thing in their life. So, the people can leave their comment, and share everything on the weblog without losing their face because nobody will know what kind of people that you are.

• boost up confidence and motivation

Blogging is the best way to boost up confidence and motivation. It is because through the blogging activities, the student can get the different comment from another people and learn something from them, and it will boost up the student confidence and encourage them to do more writing on weblog without any negative attitude, such as feel panic, fear, and hate to write.

• increases involvement among passive students

• promote brainstorming and peer review activities

As a result, blogging activities are the best and reasonable way to reduce the writing apprehension. If you have the symptoms of writing apprehension such as scared to write, ideas hardly developed, and hand cramp. Thus, you can start to try the blogging activities and you need to write, and write a lot. “Practice makes perfect” is the key phrase here.

Yahoo also provides the advertising program and we can advertise on Yahoo. We also can read the hot issues on the Yahoo as the entertainment. In addition, you can look at local weather results, upcoming movies, the Marketplace, and Yahoo International. Yahoo's home page is pretty crowded but it has a lot to offer. I've used Yahoo for many moons now; for their great Yahoo Mail service and for the My Yahoo search options.

Ericdigest.org
ERIC is a Service Mark of the U.S. Government. This site exists to provide the text of the public domain ERIC Documents previously produced by ERIC.
Ericdigest provide the academic library online and we can search for the full-text scholarly books, journals and more at www.Questia.com/Learning_Styles. So, Ericdigest is more concern on educational journal article for academic research purpose.

Similarities

Besides the differences, there are a few of similarities for mamma.com, Google Scholar, Yahoo.com, and Ericdigest.org. search engine. The similarities for this all search engine is they are provide the search toolbar at their home page and we can use the search toolbar to search any information, such as we can search images, website, and video. The all search engine also use English as the main language in their home page.

  Mamma bills itself as the "mother of all search engines"; and while that's a claim that could be disputed, Mamma puts out a pretty good metasearch engine experience. Mamma retrieves results from approximately a dozen major Internet search engines and directories and has a few nice extra search features that are worth a try.

  I wasn't completely bowled over by Mamma.com, but I do believe that it's a very solid metasearch engine. Google Scholar helps you identify the most relevant research across the world of scholarly research."

Google Scholar Shortcuts

Google Scholar can be a bit overwhelming; there's a lot of very detailed information here. Here are a few shortcuts you can use to get around more easily:

• ehrenreich poverty: If you know the general subject of an author's paper, just type in their last name with the subject.
• "barbara ehrenreich": If you're looking for a specific author's works, type in the full name (or first name initial with last name) in quotes.
• author: ehrenreich: You can also use the author operator to return an author's works.
  

• Google Scholar Advanced Search: There's a few tricks that you only do within Google Scholar Advanced Search for some reason. For instance, if you are looking for a topic from a specific publication, enter in your topic in the "Find articles with all of the words" box, and the publication in the "Publication - Return articles published in" box. Kind of tricky but it's a great way to return targeted results.

• Restrict the dates: You can also use Google Scholar Advanced Search to restrict the dates of what you're looking for; just enter in what you want in the "Date-Return articles published between" area and you're all set.

Yahoo Search Tips

Be concise. Because Yahoo’s results are both from a human edited directory and its own search engine, your results may not be as targeted as you might like them to be. Narrowing down your search to a few specific keywords will help. You can also try these Yahoo Search Shortcuts to help you get the absolute most out of Yahoo.

"Use the “Search Views". Yahoo’s main search page has tabs with various search view link, such as Images, Video, Directory, etc. that will help you to refine your search even further. For instance, if you want to look for a Weird Al video, by all means, click on the Yahoo Video tab. Your search results will be accomplished a lot more efficiently.

Use Yahoo Keywords. If you want quick, specific results, you can usually get them by targeting keywords that Yahoo gives out as “shortcuts” to find what you want. You can find this shortcut and more in my article titled Yahoo Shortcuts, and believe me, it does save a lot of time.

What are ERIC Digests?



ERIC Digests are:

Why ERICDigests.org?

The ERIC Clearinghouse system was eliminated in 2003. ERIC was massively reorganized and most of the content at the former ERIC sites (including the ERIC Digests) found new homes. This site is striving to make it easy to find ERIC Digests that have been produced prior to the end of the former ERIC system. Blogging for Language Learners (posting 2)

How blogging can assist language learners to improve and enhance their writing skill?

As we all know, blogging is something that we frequently have to update all the new information and make an editing in time to time; so, as a result it does help me improving a lot in writing. Mostly, when we want to convey a massage or information necessarily we have to make sure that the sentence structure is accordingly in terms of to make sure that our content is meaningful and understandable. Consequently, we will be familiar with the sentence structure that has a proper position.

Besides that, in blogging generally most of the idea that we have to elaborate is something that have a complex and comes in a compact information, in that cases to shorten the idea we have to make an summarizing for each information that we were responsible to do so. First, we have to search the main idea then find some example and lastly create a new passage or text that contain a complete and understandable information without missing any important idea. By doing this such activity, we now know how to make an appropriate summary. Furthermore, not forgetting in blogging we are not narrowing only in the same scope, we will as hard as we could doing something that can interact people read our blogging; on that matter, we did searching for a new and fresh information. As a result, we do get lots of new vocabulary and know how to use it semantically.

3 good reason blogging for language learners

• If you want to run a semi-successful blog, or an interesting one for that matter, you need to publish to it on a regular basis. I know a lot of people who blog whenever they can, but I think this would prove to be more difficult to manage. Establish a routine for yourself (say one hour a day) and your writing will be more enjoyable, and meaningful (your loyal readers will also thank you for the reliability). Thus,automatically your writing skill will be improved if you established blogging as your routine.Hopefully, you can translate this routine, or learn from it, to your more enjoyable writing endeavors.

• If you want to better your writing skills, you need to write, and write a lot. “Practice makes perfect” is the key phrase here. Think of how much practice you’ll get if you post to your blog at least once a day (keeping in mind that you want to improve)? I’m not going to say that this blogging habit will automatically make you a great writer, or allow you to publish to magazines, but it should give you a good foundation for that.

• I found that my blogging routine does something as important as the first two in this list, it sets my mind at ease when I get started, and allows it to be as creative as it wants to be. Why? If you’re posting on a regular basis, well, you will need something to write about. Your mind gets into the creative mode when it comes time to post. This creativity will transfer (from your blogging) to your other writing projects. Thus, blogging is the good way for us to express our thoughts and become our mind more creativity, then it was the good for you to improve your writing skill.

What is the Impact of blogging to student and society?

Blogs, the more popular term for weblogs, are seen as a genre of social software. Blogs began proliferating in the early 2000s due to the advent of blogging software such as Blogger, Wordpress, and Moveabl Type.Today, the number of bloggers continues to increase daily.

The impact of blogging to student is providing a virtual platform for participation for those students who hesitate to talk in classroom. For example, sometime the student considers himself or herself as a passive student in term of in-class interactions. On many occasion, they hesitate to express their thoughts to the class or respond to the instructor’s and classmates’ opinions. Thus, for those students, they using blogs as a means to increase class participation in fact help them learn.

In addition, sometime there are have some student commented that “traditional classroom learning is usually teacher-centred and discussions in class cannot reach the conclusions, and people who are self-conscious usually do not participate”. However, people treat blogs as personal space, and in turn, are more willing to speak up.

Sometimes, the student perceived receiving feedback from others as appositive experience. For example, the student is like to read others’ comments and critiques on their blog posts; however, the premise is creating a blog site that has meaningful content and uniqueness. It also will help the student to get the motivation to write is knowing that he or her may receive responses from others. Therefore, I think blogs have positive impacts on the effectiveness of learning.

Besides that, the internet created a platform to enable free flowing communication and information exchange, but it wasn't until blogging hit the mainstream that the web became a medium to capture society's stream of consciousness. People of all backgrounds, interests, and biases now contribute to the global discourse on human affairs.

There are many impact of blogging to society. Nowadays, blogs have become a big business with a couple of recent blog networks being acquired by large companies. For example, America Online purchased Weblogs, Inc. in October 2005 for an estimated $25 million. Weblogs, Inc. is a network of over 85 blogs covering a variety of topic areas. Now, new blog networks are popping up and it will be interesting to see if the traditional media outlets acquire the popular blog networks much as they did popular content sites in the late 1990s.

For individual blogs, it is a common practice to use Google Adsense as a means to earn money through advertising. While most blogs earn in the tens of dollars per month range, some of the most popular blogs reportedly earn thousands of dollars per month.

Apart from that, Political blogs are some of the most common blogs in the blogosphere. For example, Dato' Seri Abdullah Hj. Ahmad Badawi is a Malaysian politician who has served as Prime Minister since 2003 use blogging as a way to reach out to his supporters. Through blogging he was able to establish a loyal following before the traditional media outlets took him seriously. Now, it is common practice for political candidates of all levels to use blogs as a campaign tool.

In conclusion, blog is a great environment to read other people's ideas, those ideas may not always be fact-based, insightful, or politically/culturally correct. However, blogging does provide anyone with access to the web a way to write about anything they want and potentially reach a global audience. This has not been possible in the past and we've only begun to see the consequences.The only real question is when are you going to start a blog?

FRASER'S HILL (posting 1)

Reading Online Text

Fraser’s Hill was discovered by a Louis James Fraser in the early 19th century, who himself mysteriously disappeared from the hill one day. Originally a coal mine, Fraser’s Hill has today become one of Malaysia’s most popular highland destinations. With a cooling countryside and rich natural heritage, Fraser’s Hill attracts golfers and bird-watchers from across the country. Historical, colonial-styled bungalows still scatter the landscape, many turned into resorts to accommodate guests for the weekend. Fraser's Hill is truly an idyllic place for one to rest and to escape from not only the heat and humidity but also the hustle and bustle of city life. It is perhaps the prettiest of the Malaysian Hill resorts.

To get to Fraser's Hill from the Gap, one must go up a narrow, winding, one-way road for 8 km. Traffic up and down is controlled by a gate system with uphill traffic limited to odd hours, and downhill traffic to even hours. There are hotels, resorts and chalets available on the hill. Tudor cottages sit among brilliantly coloured gardens shaded by lofty pine trees. Fraser's Hill is popular with the locals and foreign tourists for its greenery, forest walks, fresh air and exotic flower gardens, not to mention the golfing facilities. It has many attractions within and around the area. There is a nature education center where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna of the area. Bird watching is a very popular pastime and Fraser's Hill is the venue of the annual Bird Race which attracts many foreign mythologists.

JUNGLE-TREKKING

Fraser’s Hill is covered with rich highland forest – there are many trails for eco-tourists to choose from that range in distance anywhere from 1-5 km. Some of the most popular trails are the Hemmant Trail, Maxwell Trail, Mager Trail, Kindersley Trail and Abu Suradi Trails. The longest trail is the Pine Tree Trail which requires the assistance of a guide.

BIRD WATCHING

A sanctuary for over 260 species of local and migratory birds, Fraser’s Hill is perfect for those who love watching feathered creatures in their element. Annual events include the International Bird Race where participants will try to outdo each other to sight, identify and record as many local species as possible. Some of the birds you can see here include the mountain imperial pigeon, silver-eared mesia, mountain tailorbird, rhinoceros hornbill, long-tailed sibia and chestnut-capped thrush.


WATERFALL


There are a few waterfalls that brim with crystal-clear mountain water around the hills of Fraser. Jeriau waterfalls are located about 4 km from the town center, the nearest one. Visitors can also visit Allan’s Water a former reservoir where you can boat and fish. Another 15 km away from Fraser’s Hill is the Telaga Waterfall, a bigger, more scenic area to picnic. Visitors can also check out other waterfalls near Fraser’s Hills and Raub including Lata Berembun, Jeram Besu , Lata Jarum and Lata Lembik.


GOLF

Golf enthusiasts can take their pick from a smaller 9-hole course to an 18-hole course in Frasers’ Hill.The 9-hole course is an old heritage course designed by Frank Hemmant in 1925 with undulating fairways and rolling greens bordered by pine trees.
